Create luxurious guest rooms using three key strategies
Let’s talk about how to create luxurious guest rooms. Here I share THREE key strategies to elevate your guest rooms just in time for the holidays. As we head into the holiday season, you may be excitedly planning for your out-of-town guests. Whether they are adults, children, or a combination of the two, where to put them, and what the accommodations will look like, may be a recurring challenge! Let’s disentangle the guest room.
Tip #1: Keep It Minimal
First, the most calming (and luxurious) guest rooms have only a few pieces of furniture. Pick the bed size. Is it a workhorse queen-size bed that is roomy enough for couples for a weekend, or two twin beds to accommodate the grandchildren or adult relatives that will share a room for the stay? For even more flexibility, consider a twin bed bridge so you can convert your twin beds into a king when the need arises.
No need for dressers, but consider a small desk/vanity, an interesting side chair or bench, and luggage racks. Luggage racks add immediate value to the guests, but they easily hide away in a closet when not in use (remember, minimal). Alternative seating, such as a side chair or bench, is a welcome addition for travelers. Try a bench or chair with a beautiful silhouette and luxurious upholstery. These can bring in a lot of personality to the space, and they can be easily moved to other parts of your house when guests leave. If your guest room is on the larger side, add a small desk or vanity so guests can have a quiet place to work or relax that is away from the crowd.
Tip #2: Create a Strong Focal Point with Original Art
A large piece of art placed over the headboard or positioned on another wall creates an immediate sense of style. This is one of the secrets to creating an elevated, calming environment. Focus on one sizable piece of art rather than undersized or mismatched smaller pieces for a room. It surprisingly makes a room feel less cluttered and more polished. Tip #3: Add Bold Color or Pattern to the Walls
If you have room in your budget and want to add more visual interest to your walls, think about a bold paint color or wallpaper. I like to use this strategy when there is a room that lacks interesting architectural features or may have less natural light during the day. And don’t just do one wall, do it on all the walls in the room!

Introduce a Splash of Pattern to the Bed(s)
Whether it is a beautiful throw pillow or a unique blanket, try to layer the bed(s) with a collection of patterns for visual interest–and comfort! Above, we have assembled a duvet cover from L.L. Bean, a throw blanket from Lori Brunner Art, pillows from Ballard Designs, and Room & Board. This is not just for looks! Guests may enjoy the extra blanket or two to wrap up in on the sofa, or to just moderate their temperature preferences.
